HSBC has appointed Tony McDonnell as global head of alternative investments with immediate effect.

In an expansion of his current role, McDonnell will continue to execute HSBC’s private assets strategy, as well as have responsibility for the global operating model for hedge funds.

He will focus solely on the front-to-back development of alternative assets and will relinquish his country head responsibilities that he previously held at HSBC.

In addition, he will continue to be based in Ireland, and will now report to Sebastien Danloy functionally and to Alan Duffy at an entity level.

McDonell joined HSBC in 2002 and held front-office roles focused on developing and growing the securities services business across both alternative and traditional asset classes.

For the last seven years, he has been the country head for securities services in Ireland, and since the summer of 2019, has had the additional responsibility of establishing private assets as a product across securities services globally.

Meanwhile, John Weedle will assume the role of acting country head for securities services in Ireland, subject to regulatory approvals, reporting to Carl Andrews on an interim basis.
