Standard Chartered Bank has appointed Jean Lu as CEO for China and executive vice chairperson of the board of Standard Chartered China.
In her new role, Lu will oversee the bank’s operations in mainland China, reporting to Mary Huen, CEO for Hong Kong, and Greater China and North Asia (GCNA).
Lu succeeds Jerry Zhang — formerly cluster CEO for China and Japan, and executive vice chairperson of Standard Chartered China — who has been named global co-head of financial institutions coverage, relocating to Hong Kong.
Previously holding senior management positions in Chinese and international banks, Lu brings 30 years of experience in the industry to her new role.
Since joining Standard Chartered in 2014, Lu has been in several leadership positions, including head of corporate and investment banking (CIB) and deputy CEO at Standard Chartered China.
Under Lu’s leadership, Standard Chartered’s China CIB business has consistently been the top network income originator for the group, according to the firm.
Benjamin Hung, president of International at Standard Chartered, says: “Jean has a proven track record in leading multiple teams to develop and grow our CIB business, creating value for our clients through innovative financial services.
“She has a profound understanding of the opportunities brought about by China’s financial opening and new economy, as well as market dynamics and the needs of our clients.”
Upon starting her new role, Lu comments: “China’s ongoing financial opening and long-term growth prospects will continue to bring about significant opportunities for international financial institutions. [..] We will proactively promote opportunities for collaboration between China and the rest of the world, contributing to the high-quality development of the local economy and our franchise in China.”
