The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has appointed Gaston Gelos as deputy head of the monetary and economic department and head of financial stability policy. He replaces Stijn Claessens in the role, effective 1 September 2023.

Gelos has almost 30 years of experience in the industry, more than 24 of which have been spent with the International Monetary Fund. Most recently, he was assistant director in the Western hemisphere department and mission chief for Mexico at the firm.

Prior to this, he held a number of senior roles including division chief for the global financial security division and the monetary and macroprudential policies division.

Commenting on his appointment via LinkedIn, Gelos says: “Very much looking forward to this exciting and challenging new role at a fantastic institution!”
